I signed up for shot put and 100 meter dash. I'm not exactly all that great at either... but they are both really fun and I love practices! Track is really fun because a lot of my friends are in it too, and there is a bunch of different events to try. I can't wait for our first meet!
Track season started a few weeks ago! Today was the end of our second week of mandatory practice. Track has a lot of events like hurdles, sprints, long jump, discus, shot put, and longer distances like the mile.

My family and I all made brackets for NCAA March Madness. Whoever wins gets $5 and picks where we go for dinner. (I picked Chili Verde) So pretty much everyone wins except my dad!
I said it's going to come down to Kentucky and Duke, and Kentucky is going to win. So far I have gotten them all right except Gonzaga and UCLA. Which was the most important game on bracket because if I lost I would tie with my sister. We only had two differences on our brackets, She lost the first one then I lost one, so we are even. If the rest of our brackets is right I guess we will just have to go to two restaurants! Last Tuesday was my first guitar lessons at Music Royale. I was really nervous because I had no idea what I was doing! I somewhat know how to play piano, violin, and clarinet from a few years of lessons, so I kinda knew how to read music. But guitar is wayyyy different from all those other instruments!
First starting the guitar is really awkward because it is a bigger instrument, but I still learned a few chords! (which I am still working on) So (hopefully) soon enough I will be playing some actual songs! A week ago my mom, sister, cousin, and I went to a store called Half Priced Books. This is my all time favorite store ever! They have a ton of posters, records, and (obviously) books. Pretty much all the books they have are under $10!
While I was there I got two books and sticky notes. I got Cujo by Stephan King, Looking for Alaska by John Green, and the sticky notes I got were Doctor Who themed. The total cost was only $14! My birthday is on March 14. For my birthday my family and I went to Chili Verde (which means chili green... Thanks spanish class!) It was super busy, but it was worth it! The food was really good and they have the BEST chips and salsa ever!
After dinner we went home for ice cream cake (which was also very delicious) and presents. I got a guitar, a month of lessons, and a bunch of gift cards for Forever 21 and Barns and Nobles! Last Friday, school was canceled due to the snow. My family and I were already planning to go to Kalahari that weekend, but since we got the day off we decided to leave a day early. So we all got in the car and used the passes my grandparents got us for Christmas. The ride there was NOT fun because I was being crushed by a car seat that held my crying cousin. But it was all worth it when we finally got to Kalahari.
Kalahari is a hotel with huge indoor water park. They have a ton of slides, pools, and TWO of those surfing simulators! And not to mention the arcade! Other than that, they also have restaurants and candy shops. It was surprisingly crowded, even though it was still snowing! In the show Star Track, they have a Tricorde which is a device that tells the doctor all the patients data. And now a similar product is actually on the market and are being sold. This new technology is called "Scanadu Scout".
Its a small round device that works by placing it on your forehead. It has a sensor that almost immediately tells you heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, oxygen level and provides a complete ECG reading. "We've medicalised your smartphone. You can now check your health as easily as your email. People will no longer ask if there's a doctor on the plane, but if there's a Tricorder." says Walter De Brouwer, a Belgian entrepreneur. Hall0w City by Ransom Riggs is the Sequel to Mrs. Peregrines' Home for Peculiar Children. This series is one of my favorites! It's a mix between science fiction and historical fiction.
In the book, a group of children with weird abilities set up a camp in the early 1900's The camp stays in the same day and never moves forward in time. The camps purpose was to keep the kids safe from monsters. But it gets invaded and the kids are all by themselves to save it. Last Saturday was Saturday Night Lives 40th anniversary. The show has been airing since October 1975. It is currently hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Saturday Night live is a comedy show with a lot of guest stars and skits. One of the most popular is "Weekend Update"
The 40th anniversary aired live from New York’s Studio 8H at NBC. The opening credits had around 80 names! The event aired for 2 hours on NBC. It included many skits and musical performances. "Beyoncé" even showed up! People always underestimate the power of book, but books can leave a long lasting impression and change the way we think. In fact, one in particular is inspiring a resistance against an oppressive government. Thailand's military says they are now under military rule and suspended the constitution to restore order. Gatherings of more than five people have been banned, nationwide curfew is in force between 22:00 and 05:00 local time, and the broadcast media have been told to suspend all normal programming. But how does that have anything to do with books? Well, in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins the three finger salute was used as a sign of rebellion. Now the citizens of Thailand have also adopted the three finger salute to protest the government. Protesters were asked what the symbol meant, and a ton of different answers were given. Some say it stands for the French Revolution's trinity of values: liberty, equality, fraternity. Others say it means freedom, election, and democracy. The government decided to not show Mockingjay Part 1, but that didn't slow anyone down.. The book inspired people to protest their governments and gave them an easy way to do it. So I'm pretty sure it's more than "just words printed on paper" The 3Doodler 2.0 is probably the one of coolest product to come out this year. The 3Doodler is the first 3D drawing pen. The fist model came out in 2013 and it has a variety of colors and accessories. But this year they're coming out with another model.
The 3Doodle 2.0 is completely redesigned. It is way smaller than the original. The 2.0 is only suppose to use half the power too. There's also a ton of new accessories. It's about time! In 2006 astronomers demoted Pluto to a dwarf planet. They said that to be classified as a planet it must orbit the sun, must be big enough for gravity to squash it into a round ball, and it must have cleared other things out of the way in its orbital neighborhood. Pluto did not fit this category because it hasn't "cleared the neighborhood". So astronomers voted that it was no longer a planet.
It hasn't been voted on yet in the general assembly , so it's not officially a planet yet. But the next IAU general assembly is this year in Honolulu. Also most scientist are already saying it should be considered a planet. Harvard science historian Owen Gingerich said "a planet is a culturally defined word that changes over time," and that Pluto is a planet. If you don't know what King Cakes are, they are like a cake filled with something like crushed pecans or fruit. Then iced in purple, green, and blue. (the colors of Mardi Gras) Traditionally, you put a little toy in them and whoever finds it is suppose to buy the next king cake or host the next party. They are very popular in New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras.
One of our Eagle News projects is to do a video on a food from a city. Obviously I choose king cakes. =] Tomorrow I'm bringing a king cake for a prop. (It's really a angle food cake iced to look like a king cake. I mean where am I supposed to find a king cake outside of Louisiana, during December? And they take forever to make! Haha at lest I tried!) I'm really excited to finish the video and play it on the news (hopefully) ! The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my all time favorite books! It is about a kid named Charlie and his experience in high school. One thing I really like about this book is the format, because its all written through letters. The book doesn't reveal who they are too, but its someone Charlie really trusts. But the best thing about the book is how it shows his point of view on things. Charlie has been through a lot which I think led to some mental issues, so he has a interesting view on things that most people don't think of. Stephan Chobosky did an excellent job writing this book. and a couple years ago they turned it into a movie! (Which I haven't seen yet)
I would recommend this book to 7th grade- high school girls, and if you're younger you might want to ask your parents first. Because the book does have a little bit of inappropriate content. Girls would enjoy this book more because its mainly about high school drama. Happy thanksgiving! I decided to do a little research on the holiday this week. Of course we all know it started in 1621 when the Plymouth Colonist and Wampanoag Indians had a feast to celebrate their harvest. It wasn't until 1863 Abraham Lincoln declared it a national holiday.
Today its a little more about football and visiting family then it was in 1621. The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimated that 42.2 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2010. Also, I'm pretty sure they didn't have black Friday and cyber Monday back then either. This morning my mom, my grandpa, and I went to see Mockingjay Part One. It is an amazing movie based on the book by Suzanne Collins. Mockingjay is the third movie (and book) in the Hunger Games series. It stars Jenifer Lawrence as Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as peeta,, Liam Hemsworth as Gale, and so on. I think that most of the actors did an excellent job portraying the characters, and for the most part it follows the book. Although, I did imagine president Coin totally different, but Julianne Moore was pretty close. The only thing I really didn't like about the movie, is that it didn't pick up from Catching Fire that well. Catching Fire left off from the part were she was being lifted into the plain from the arena. Mockinjay started off from when she was already in District 13. They left out the whole scene where she was on her way to District 13, which left a big gap between movies. Overall, I loved the movie and it's one of my new favorites. On Wednesday, the Philae reached its target on a comet 310 million miles from Earth. Philae's purpose was to send data back to help us learn about how our solar system was formed. It was launched about 10 years ago by the ESA (European Space Agency)
A few days after landing, Philae ran out of batteries. They are no longer receiving data and are unsure if they will again. ESA says its now in "idle mode'. To be honest, I find this hilarious! I mean after 10 years, something like running out of batteries is what gets in their way! Maybe they should give that bunny from the Energizer commercials a call! Everyone is talking about Ebola, but I saw this cartoon in The Week magazine. The cartoon is questioning whether Americans should be worried about the disease. Ebola is an illness that causes internal bleeding which normally results in death. A big misconception about Ebola is that its highly contagious. But its just highly infectious not contagious.
cartoon is pretty much making fun of Americans for being so worried about Ebola. In Africa, Ebola is a threat, but so far only one person in America has died from it! That's nothing compared to 300,00 deaths from obesity, 450,000 deaths from tobacco, and 88,000 from alcohol. And those are just per year! So should Americans really be worried about Ebola? Lost is a T.v. series that I found on Netflix, It's about an airplane that crash landed of a mysterious island. The survivors are trying to work together to make a livable civilization, but they run into a few problems. So far I am almost done with season 2, and I can't stop watching it!
Carrie by Stephan King is a chilling story about a girl who has telekinetic powers. Her mom was extremely religious and has forced her beliefs on her daughter Carrie. Carries strong beliefs and rituals made her an outcast and bullied at school. When discovers her powers, she never uses them to her advantage, until one night her classmates take the bullying too far. It's a haunting story and is perfect read for Halloween!
